Home gym fitness solutions have been all the rage since well before the pandemic but certainly picked up a bit in popularity the past year while so many were stuck at home.
Many new calisthenics equipment started being marketed, making it a little challenging to learn which piece of home gear is suitable for your situation. When you get bombarded by endless Facebook ads for a brand new calisthenics system you “must buy right now,” things can get a little annoying.
That is why we were delighted to review the MaxPro fitness system, including their SmartConnect and other cool accessories.
We had heard many great things about the SmartConnect gym features from Shark Tank and advertisements featuring Shaquille O’Neal and wanted to review them for ourselves. But, most of the time, we are just looking for something that can maintain our health with a great workout while at home. The smart gym MaxPro does that, and so much more. Read on for our honest, in-depth review of the MaxPro fitness system.
MaxPro Fitness Overview
As far as home gym equipment goes, the MaxPro fitness system can easily fit into a large backpack. Dubbed the gym of the future, MaxPro created a truly portable experience that is perfect for smaller apartments, traveling, or for those garage gym conversions. You don’t have to find a ton of extra room around your home to make the MaxPro Smart Connect work for your lifestyle.
If you read nothing else from this review, let it sink in that you get a decent calisthenics workout in a small form factor.
MaxPro is a company based in Detroit that took the engineering from the automotive industry and put it into custom home gym equipment. Their goal was simple, create an at-home piece of equipment that can deliver on a solid workout with numerous versatile options.
MaxPro was featured on SharkTank, season 13. The founder talked about creating the device first as a doodle on a napkin and then recruiting a team of expert engineers to make the MaxPro into a reality. But, of course, it did not hurt having Detroit as the founding city with so many automotive experts at hand.
Essentially this home fitness gym is a portable smart cable system featuring a Bluetooth connection to use with the MaxPro app that keeps you fit and provides real-time feedback . You can exercise focused on burning fat, toning muscle, stretching joints, or simply staying active. The total resistance is around 300 pounds and can be adjusted to fit your calisthenics style.
Everything in the MaxPro is based around the SmartConnect platform you stand on that looks like a modern hoverboard without the wheels. That is also where you make most of the equipment resistance adjustments.
The video below is a great summary of the MaxPro Fitness products:
Who is MaxPro Fitness Good For?
The primary market for the MaxPro SmartConnect fitness system is at-home workout enthusiasts who either cannot get to the gym all that often for scheduling conflicts or just don’t like the gym atmosphere.
We ran this fitness equipment through the wringer during our review and found it to be effective for everyone. We have a few huskier fellas that had no problem getting the different exercises and equipment to function with the app. However, we also have a few gym rats who think you can get a solid workout using the different features of the MaxPro, especially when you connect it to a doorway for upper body focus.
The MaxPro SmartConnect is also an excellent solution for those people living in tight quarters. MaxPro does a decent job compacting the entire device into a small form factor, so you don’t need a ton of room.
Having the space overhead was more important than having the stretch-out room you usually need with other at-home gyms we’ve reviewed in the past. The biggest thing you need to make sure you have is a solid doorway.
This home workout system is also great for people who like to review their workout routine status. That is because the SmartConnect from MaxPro uses a Bluetooth-connected application that can track your workouts and give you the workout data you want to measure how well you are doing overtime.
There is no minimum experience needed with the MaxPro. The weight system and accessories work for the low weight of 5 pounds all the way up to 300 pounds of resistance. So you can be an absolute beginner just starting your fitness journey and get a lot out of the MaxPro.
MaxPro Fitness SmartConnect
The MaxPro fitness system works by unfolding a small unit that you can stand on or attach to a regular door for arm exercises. The unit ways less than 9 pounds, so it takes minimal effort to get it into position precisely the way you want.
Whether standing or pulling from the door, the MaxPro uses a system of smart wires that can be adjusted to different weight resistances. This gives you the capabilities of doing pretty much any calisthenics exercise you could want, including flys, curls, squats, and even boxing.
The MaxPro is primarily a concentric-focused piece of home gym equipment. You only feel resistance as you pull away from the base, not as it returns. This is important because MaxPro spends a lot of time on their website explaining the many benefits of concentric exercise compared to others. In addition, MaxPro wants users to grow muscle fiber diameter versus length.
We were impressed during our review of the many accessories that come with the MaxPro Smart Connect gym system. You get bars, writs straps, door mount, and more, all within a small box shipped straight to your door. In addition, the three bars can be connected for a more extended, single long bar for different calisthenics or fitness needs like a bench press.
We’ve said it before in other reviews, but cable-based home gyms provide some of the most versatile exercises possible. You can pretty much do any of the cardio training, strength training, HIIT, Tabata, circuit training, and more you could want with the MaxPro fitness equipment.
The SmartConnect Application
We wanted to point out this fantastic feature of the MaxPro system in our review. It has never been easier to connect any device and integrate modern technology than in today’s fast-paced world, and MaxPro does an excellent job of offering customers an all-in-one home for data, workouts, and advice through their app.
The Max Pro app is similar to Peloton or NordicTrack in that you get programming through the SmartConnect coaching feature. All you do is connect via Bluetooth, download the app, and log in, and you’re good to go.
MaxPro Fitness SmartConnect Pros and Cons
MaxPro Fitness Accessories
Like our other at-home fitness reviews, MaxPro also offers different equipment accessories to amplify the use of their SmartConnect system. None of these are required to get the full calisthenics advantage of the MaxPro, but certainly, help.
MaxPro Slim Line Wall Track
A single track can be attached really easily to any wall for those who do not want to use a doorway for their MaxPro SmartConnect with the MaxPro Slim Line. We suggest identifying studs before putting this on your wall because it uses a decent amount of resistance and can cause damage otherwise. During our review, most of our testers suggested this accessory for garage-based home gyms.
Essentially this track is put vertically on your wall and allows your MaxPro to clip into whatever height you’d like for the different calisthenics and fitness exercises you complete.
It uses aluminum reinforced rails that allow you to transition pretty quickly between different MaxPro workouts. This has the potential to elevate your fitness gym with additional exercises. We tried it out and had no issues, but we also have a decent amount of wall space.
You only need this if you want a more permanent place in your home for a calisthenics workout. Otherwise, a doorway works just as well, even though it does take a bit more time to set up or move the MaxPro.
MaxPro Fitness Foldable Bench
Unlike the Slim Line Wall Track, we think this MaxPro Foldable Bench is a must-have! We all said it could use a bench feature when we started our initial review of the MaxPro SmartConnect at-home fitness system. Not two days later, we were able to get our hands on their bench accessories and couldn’t be happier. This was a great addition to the MaxPro Fitness SmartConnect.
The number one complaint we always have about at-home gym systems is a lack of benches. Yet, they are so versatile and provide the comfort of recognizable weight workouts for most people that focus on building muscle.
The MaxPro fitness bench is ready straight out of the box. You unfold and tighten a few things, and that is it. The bases of the bench hook directly onto the MaxPro SmartConnect system so you get the standard calisthenics and weight resistance workouts you’re more used to from a traditional gym setting.
We couldn’t find the total amount of weight that the bench can hold, but again, we have some big dudes on our review team, and neither one of them had an issue. So be sure to ask or call before you order, just in case.
You can purchase all the accessories you want for any replacements you may need. We didn’t anticipate needing anything after our review, but it is good to know you can pick up a couple of wrist straps or workout handles if required.
We did want to point out two accessories that seem well worth the money. The first is the MaxPro backpack that is specifically designed for the MaxPro SmartConnect system. This helps those who travel a lot or want a decent case for hiding their MaxPro in-between uses.
The other is the MaxPro sliding bench. This is way more expensive at $1,000+, but a fun accessory for those who like rowing machines or some added versatility in their home fitness gym.
Can You Build Muscle or Lose Weight with MaxPro Fitness SmartConnect?
Yes and Yes! We have a wide range of people in our office that had no problem taking advantage of the MaxPro home fitness system. As always, you’ll need to combine your workouts with a decent diet, but in general, you can quickly build up a sweat and target muscle groups for building muscle.
We strongly encourage you to utilize the MaxPro SmartConnect app feature as many expertly led workout routines focus on different outcomes and parts of the body where you could want the most help.
Keep in mind that the significant advantage of the MaxPro is that anyone can use it! The resistance can be set from a low of 5 pounds to a high of 300 pounds with a simple turn of a dial. So it doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up free weights before or if you are an avid gym participant. The MaxPro can give you calisthenics or weight workout right from the comfort of your home.
The different bars and accessories are easy to use, and you can incorporate the MaxPro into more HIIT or cardio-focused circuits. If your goal is to burn as many calories as possible, this multifunctional fitness equipment will work.
Combining the workout capabilities of the MaxPro with the SmartConnect app helps track all your workouts. This way, you can get your performance’s valuable data and analytics for record keeping. That info provides all the motivation and direction you need to increase your workout sessions with higher MaxPro resistance or different exercises as you progress towards your fitness goals.
Remember that the MaxPro is focused on concentric exercises as it only provides resistance as you pull away from the platform. None of us have a strong background in kinesiology, but the goal is to increase the diameter of your muscle tone, which we all could appreciate.
Is MaxPro Fitness Worth It?
The MaxPro Fitness SmartConnect system is more than worth the cost for our money. You get an easy-to-use system that delivers on its workout and calisthenics promise in a compact form fact you can carry pretty much anywhere. In addition, at only 9 or so pounds, the entire MaxPro is incredibly versatile.
Not only that, but you get a bespoke mobile application that enhances all your MaxPro use. You’ll be able to track details of your different fitness workouts and gym exercise from your phone. You also get access to expertly led circuits and regimenting that elevate your home work out.
Many of us suffer from the lack of initial motivation needed to hit the gym routinely. However, if you set a reminder on your phone for when you want to work out and then turn on the workout on your app, you’re already halfway there.
Plus, you get to use the MaxPro at home instead of suffering from the unwanted stares or awkward glances of people at the gym. Even if you are a frequent gym user, you can still use the MaxPro to target additional areas you don’t always get to work out at the gym.
We recommend the MaxPro SmartConnect system for anyone that enjoys a home fitness routine or portable workout solution. This is also an excellent system for beginners or larger families that require different resistance settings according to the expectations of different-sized people.
